Making Tax Digital
Making Tax Digital: we'll get you ready and keep you on track.
HMRC is moving income tax online. If you are a sole trader or landlord above the income threshold, you now keep digital records, send HMRC an update every quarter and make a final declaration after the year ends.
If you charge VAT, you will already know Making Tax Digital for VAT: digital records and software-filed returns. We handle that too.
Who is affected, and when
It depends on your gross income from self-employment and property combined, before any expenses. The threshold falls in stages.
| You must start from | If gross income is | Measured using |
|---|---|---|
| 6 April 2026 | Over £50,000 | 2024 to 2025 Self Assessment return |
| 6 April 2027 | Over £30,000 | 2025 to 2026 Self Assessment return |
| 6 April 2028 | Over £20,000 | 2026 to 2027 Self Assessment return |
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to individuals. The tax your own limited company pays is not affected, but if you also have rental or self-employment income in your own name, you may be. Some people are exempt. If your accounts run to 31 March, your start date is 1 April.
The quarterly rhythm
Each update is a summary of your income and expenses so far this year, not a tax return and not a pile of receipts. An update is needed even if nothing happened in the period.
- 7 AugustUpdate for 6 April to 5 July
- 7 NovemberUpdate for 6 April to 5 October
- 7 FebruaryUpdate for 6 April to 5 January
- 7 MayUpdate for 6 April to 5 April, after the tax year ends
The dates above are for standard quarters. You can choose calendar quarters instead (ending 30 June, 30 September, 31 December and 31 March), which keeps the same deadlines. Late quarterly updates earn no penalty points in 2026 to 2027. After that, each late update earns one point, and four points bring a £200 penalty.
